Decking Made Easier
A Speedier Method For Decking

I wrote this document to be an easy substitute for decking in a campaign. I have neither the inclination, nor the money to purchase Virtual Realities 2, and I do not wish to run the old (and cumbersome) decking rules. I know it takes quite a few liberties with the rules, and sometimes goes completely off course but I believe that in a campaign where information gathered through decking, or specific tasks required can only be performed by a decker, this is an easy substitute. Of course the most obvious solution is that an NPC decker should be used, but this method will work if the characters insist on having a decker in a decker free campaign. Please don't complain too hard.

1) Decide on a system color and rating for the system. Below are a few guidelines.
Rating 1-4:         Low systems, coffee makers, ttoasters, small stores.
Rating 5-6:         Moderate systems, low profile data, upscale stores, some security systems.
Rating 7-10:       High sytems, high profile data, maglocks, cameras, fences.
Rating 12+:         The big league, Fuchi mainframe, UCAS government, military.
      Green:         Stuffer Shack, small stores.
Orange:       Small banks, larger stores, small low key corp holdings.
Red:             Corp security systems, anyplace a decker probably wants to go.

2) Have the decker roll his computer (decking) skill plus one dice for every two karma pool (round up), plus task pool dice versus a target number equal to the system rating.

Health modifiers: as is
Cyberdeck model:
    Radio Shack: +4
    Allegiance Alpha: +2
    Sony: +1
    Fuchi-4: 0
    Fuchi-6: -1
    Fuchi-7: -2
    Fairlight Excalabur: -4
Each success generated by sytem to date: +1 each
Each subsequent task required by decker past first: +1 each
System operators are expecting intrusion: +2
Security rating modifiers drop by one for each hour of inactivity

3) Determine response of system: Havve the system roll its power verus a target number equal to the (masking+evasion+sensors)/3 of the target counting in appropriate modifiers from the table below. The system the responds according to its color, as also seen by the following table. This is assuming the decker is trying to do something illegal in the first place

System Color:
    Blue: +1
    Green: 0
    Orange: -1
    Red: -2
Every Subsequent task past first by intruder: -1
Every success in intruder's task: +1
Resist deck damage with Bod and subtrack hardening of deck from power of attack.

Number of Successes
Blue:
    0-1:      No response.
    2-3:      Authorities notified.
4-5:      Authorities notified, (system rating)M(stun) wound.
6+:        Not usually obtainable by these systems.

Green:
    0-1:      No response.
    2-3:      Authorities Notified.
4-5:      Authorities Notified, (system rtg)M(stun) wound.
6+:         Authorities Notified, (system rtg)M to deck, (system rtg)M(stun) wound.

Orange:
    0:          No response.
    1-2:      (system rtg)M(stun)wound.
    3-4:      (system rtg)M(stun)wound, (system rtg)M to deck.
    5-6:      (system rtg)S(stun)wound, (system rtg)M to deck.
7+:        (system rtg)M wound, (system rtg)S to deck.

Red:
    0:          No response.
    1:          (system rtg)M(stun)wound.
    2:          (system rtg)M(stun)wound, (system rtg)M to deck.
    3:          (system rtg)S(stun)wound, (system rtg)M to deck.
4:            (system rtg)M wound, (system rtg)S to deck.
5:            (system rtg)S wound, (system rtg)S to deck.
6+:          (system rtg)S wound, (system rtg)D to deck.

Example:
Slippery Eddie the decker wants to turn off the mall security system at 1 AM so he can stal that wiz new simsense rig from Radio Shack. he figures as long as he is in the sytem he might as well see if he can find any paydata in the Fuchi sotre; it's a long shot, but worht a try. The system he going up agains is an Orange-6 (that's what you get for shopping in Bellvue). Eddie has a computer skill of 5, a karma pool of 3, a level 2 enchephalon and a Fuchi-4 deck to hack the system with. He therefore has a 5(skill) + 2(karma) + 1(task pool) or 8 dice to roll. His target number is 6 (the system rating) and there are no modifiers. In Eddie's roll her obtains an 8, 8, 4, 4, 4, 2, 1, 1 (two successes); the system if off. The computer then responds, with six dice versus a target number of 4 (Eddie doesn't have a very good deck). The computer gets 10, 10, 9, 7, 7, 2 (wow the system is hot tonight). Looking at the chart Eddie has some damage to resist, and may have to reconsider checking out the Fuchi store tonight.
